McCain clearly is not that. An email might not change everyone&#8217;s mind. I&#8217;m an Obama supporter. I didn&#8217;t start out this way (I was a McCain supporter in 2000). But the past few months have reinforced my choice, as Obama guided his billion dollar behemoth of a campaign with coolness under pressure and grit under attack. Through all of it, I have been receiving emails that smeared Obama with lies.<\/p>\n<p>Convinced that the facts and the times support my case, I researched and wrote this. Gen. Paul Eaton<\/a><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\"><a title=\"one general said\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/feature\/2008\/03\/06\/commander_in_chief\/\" target=\"_blank\"> said<\/a>, &#8220;<\/span>I am a little worried by his knee-jerk response factor. I think it is a little scary. I think this guy&#8217;s first reactions are not necessarily the best reactions. I believe that he acts on impulse.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<blockquote><p>As <a title=\"another said\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/feature\/2008\/03\/06\/commander_in_chief\/\" target=\"_blank\">retired Gen. Obama is actually proposing those elderly making less than $50,000 will not have to pay any taxes or even fill out forms.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Restoring the inheritance tax\" href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/askfactcheck\/would_obama_tax_my_profits_if_i.html\" target=\"_blank\">Restoring the inheritance tax<\/a> <\/span>. The only place this claim is found is in smear emails. But wait, there&#8217;s more. As people won&#8217;t be able to afford individual health insurance plans&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>McCain wants to open &#8220;up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">as we have done over the last decade in banking<\/span>&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a title=\"An actual quote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.contingencies.org\/septoct08\/mccain.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">An actual quote [PDF]<\/a><\/strong>. McCain clearly think that removing consumer protections from health care insurance will work as well for health care as it did for banking. And it makes sense because&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>One of McCain&#8217;s closest friends and advisers, Phil Gramm, who <a title=\"wrote McCain's economic plan\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/02\/18\/news\/newsmakers\/tully_gramm.fortune\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">wrote McCain&#8217;s economic plan<\/a> and who McCain said he <a title=\"rely on\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yxXMFW1YsNQ\" target=\"_blank\">relies on to understand the economy<\/a>, didn&#8217;t believe the current crisis was possible.<br \/>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Actually True<\/strong>. Gramm said that &#8220;<a title=\"This is a mental recession...We sort of become a nation of whiners.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2NVjq2py7BA\" target=\"_blank\">This is [only] a mental recession&#8230;We sort of become a nation of whiners<\/a>,&#8221; just a few months ago. But though McCain distanced himself from the comments, but he kept Gramm&#8217;s plans in place. Gramm was, in fact, one of the authors of the bill that <a title=\"deregulated the banking industry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gramm-Leach-Bliley_Act\" target=\"_blank\">deregulated the banking industry<\/a>, which many economists say led to this crisis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">McCain will try to overturn Roe v. Wade.<\/span>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><strong style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">Actually True<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">. Although McCain surrogates <\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"Carly Fiorina said\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2008\/jul\/10\/nation\/na-carly10\" target=\"_blank\">Carly Fiorina<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"the star of one of McCain's ads, Debra Bartoshevich\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time-blog.com\/swampland\/2008\/08\/from_the_rnc_podium_mccain_doe.html\" target=\"_blank\">Debra Bartoshevich<\/a><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">, and McCain&#8217;s wife, <a title=\"Cindy McCain\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TRx0J7tz-zQ\" target=\"_blank\">Cindy McCain<\/a>, have all said that McCain won&#8217;t overturn Roe v. Wade<\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">, John McCain has promised to do so: &#8220;<\/span><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" title=\"Overturning Roe. v. Wade\" href=\"http:\/\/www.johnmccain.com\/Informing\/issues\/95b18512-d5b6-456e-90a2-12028d71df58.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Overturning Roe. v. Wade<\/a><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li>McCain has &#8220;hired to run this campaign&#8221; &#8220;the very people&#8221; who smeared McCain in the infamous 2000 primary in South Carolina against Bush (as Joe Biden has claimed.)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Actually True<\/strong>. Or at least McCain has hired some of them. ABC News reported that <a title=\"McCain hired Tucker Eskew\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.abcnews.com\/politicalpunch\/2008\/09\/mccain-hires-go.html\" target=\"_blank\">McCain hired Tucker Eskew<\/a> and the firm that made the <a title=\"Swift Boat ads\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/02\/04\/us\/politics\/04mccain.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=print&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">Swift Boat ads<\/a> he criticized in 2004. From denouncing to hiring smear artists &#8211; that&#8217;s change you can believe in.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>Alan Greenspan said that the country can&#8217;t afford John McCain&#8217;s tax cuts.<strong><a title=\"Actually True\" href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5iE2JCSH5p9r2GBkQWS9TWAMzmuvQD9361PJO0\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a title=\"Actually True\" href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5iE2JCSH5p9r2GBkQWS9TWAMzmuvQD9361PJO0\" target=\"_blank\">Actually True<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>Obama is going to raise taxes on the middle class (as McCain has said in ads and speeches.)<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Not at all<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">.<\/span><\/span> Obama <a title=\"pledged not to raise middle class taxes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UJVMWjTQh_Y\" target=\"_blank\">pledged not to raise middle class taxes<\/a> &#8211; and plans on <em><strong>cutting taxes for 90% of Americans more than McCain<\/strong><\/em>. Some didn&#8217;t. Either way, it&#8217;s a pattern.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li>Many foreign policy experts have said that Obama&#8217;s approach to the world more realistic than McCain&#8217;s, and have credited him for foresight in focusing on Pakistan and Afghanistan nearly a year ago.\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"><strong><a title=\"True\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/id\/147763\/output\/print\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\nTrue<\/a> and <a title=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2200134\/\" target=\"_blank\">true<\/a><\/strong>.<strong> <\/strong>In fact, the Bush administration, guided by a Condoleeza Rice, has moved towards Obama&#8217;s positions on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reason.com\/blog\/printer\/128741.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pakistan<\/a>, <a title=\"Iraq\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/07\/19\/world\/middleeast\/19iraq.html?hp=&amp;pagewanted=print\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq<\/a>, <a title=\"Afghanistan\" href=\"http:\/\/briefingroom.thehill.com\/2008\/07\/14\/axlerod-bush-is-coming-around-to-obamas-point-of-view-on-iraq\/\" target=\"_blank\">Afghanistan<\/a>, and <a title=\"Iran\" href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/print?id=5417864\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a> in recent months.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">Obama is a closet socialist (or communist, or other extreme leftist.)<\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Not even close<\/strong>. The timing of these accusations are a bit odd as everyone from the <a title=\"Financial Times\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ft.com\/maverecon\/2008\/07\/time-for-comrade-paulson-the-pull-the-plug-on-the-fannie-and-freddie-charade\/\" target=\"_blank\">Financial Times<\/a> to the <a title=\"Wall Street Journal\" href=\"http:\/\/wsj.com\/article\/SB122204285661261373.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> have called this Republican administration&#8217;s recent actions a form of socialism just for the rich.
