{"id":2048,"date":"2009-02-10T12:03:46","date_gmt":"2009-02-10T17:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2parse.com\/?p=2048"},"modified":"2009-02-10T10:28:51","modified_gmt":"2009-02-10T15:28:51","slug":"obamas-long-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2parse.com\/?p=2048","title":{"rendered":"Obama&#8217;s Long Game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Baker quotes Robert Gibbs, Obama&#8217;s press secretary, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/10\/us\/politics\/10assess.html?hp\">his description of Obama&#8217;s take on the state of politics and the stimulus bill<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, decried what he called a \u201cmyopic viewpoint in Washington,\u201d disconnected from the troubles of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s illuminating because it may not necessarily be where cable television is on all of this,\u201d Mr. Gibbs said. \u201cBut you know, we\u2019re sort of used to that. <strong>We lost on cable television virtually every day last year.<\/strong> So you know, there\u2019s a conventional wisdom to what\u2019s going on in America via Washington and there\u2019s the reality of what\u2019s happening in America.\u201d [my emphasis]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>John Dickerson of Slate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2210626\/\">makes a similar case<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Remember back in the Democratic primary, when the consensus was that Obama was too soft, too deliberative, and too nice to win the election? These current gripes remind me of those days. It takes time to govern.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Overall, this reinforces my post of last week about <a href=\"http:\/\/2parse.com\/\/?p=2012\">why I am (still) confident about Obama<\/a> in which I wrote that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This seems to have been Obama\u2019s strategy &#8211; to allow his campaign to take hits and play defense, sticking to an overall strategy that would gain him a final decisive victory rather than exhausting his staff fighting every daily flair-up.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Obama is once again playing the &#8220;long game&#8221; on this stimulus fight. I wonder how many times Obama will be able to do this &#8211; lose the daily fight while winning the broader point &#8211; before the media figures out his game.
