Bill Carter interviewed Conan O’Brien for the <\/a>New York Times<\/a><\/em> on his debut tonight:<\/p>\n When he walks out, Mr. O\u2019Brien said, his fans may be surprised. \u201cI think the overwhelming feeling at first will be: \u2018Oh, he\u2019s got real lighting now.\u2019\u00a0\u201d He said he had one word for what he wanted in a new set (besides better lighting): elegant.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd they did that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s very elegant.\u201d But his fans shouldn\u2019t worry: \u201cYou can still be a jackass in an elegant space.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr. O\u2019Brien expects to mine his personal dislocation for comedy. \u201cI can\u2019t go anywhere without people saying, \u2018Good luck in L.A.\u2019 Or, \u2018What\u2019s it like in L.A.?\u2019\u00a0Osama Bin Laden\u00a0is in a cave somewhere saying, \u2018I wonder how Conan will be in L.A.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n Mr. O\u2019Brien said the move would definitely affect the show. \u201cIt should be different,\u201d he said. \u201cThe only way to survive in television is to reinvent yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cI can\u2019t radically remake my personality, but this should change me in ways that I changed during the \u2018Late Night\u2019 show \u2014 in \u201993, and \u201996 and \u201998. What\u2019s nice is there does seem to be something funny about me being in L.A. It\u2019s almost like a sight gag that I\u2019m in L.A.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Gotta say – I’m really looking forward to what O’Brien will do with this – and I’m especially happy to see Andy Richter back<\/a>.<\/p>\n
