{"id":310,"date":"2008-02-28T09:26:30","date_gmt":"2008-02-28T14:26:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2parse.com\/?p=310"},"modified":"2008-02-28T09:58:53","modified_gmt":"2008-02-28T14:58:53","slug":"trial-lawyers-want-to-protect-your-civil-liberties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2parse.com\/?p=310","title":{"rendered":"Trial lawyers want to protect your civil liberties!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Just kidding<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Dan Froomkin of the <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/blog\/2008\/02\/26\/BL2008022601534_5.html\">eviserating Mr. Bush and his press secretary<\/a> over the warrantless wiretapping mess:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> The ratio of useful information to hyperbole in White House press briefings has gotten dramatically worse under press secretary Dana Perino.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few of the argumentative, nonfactual statements from yesterday&#8217;s briefing regarding the furious political battle over warrantless wiretapping.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[L]ook, the President&#8217;s most solemn obligation is to protect the American people. And in some ways it seems that the House Democrats&#8217; most solemn obligation is to help protect the trial lawyers &#8211; they&#8217;re the ones who have brought all these lawsuits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The leading lawsuits, of course, have been filed by non-profit public-interest groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Q If this is such a big deal, why didn&#8217;t the President accept another extension?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;MS. PERINO: Because the House couldn&#8217;t even pass an extension bill, even if they had wanted to. They couldn&#8217;t pass it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They couldn&#8217;t pass it because Republicans voted against it &#8211; on instructions of the White House.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long for the White House to start <a href=\"http:\/\/2parse.com\/\/?p=292\">echoing Karl Rove about how &#8220;trial lawyers&#8221; want to protect consumer privacy<\/a>.  <strike>I guess old habits die hard.<\/strike>\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure this line of attack made it&#8217;s way to the White House via Mr. Rove&#8217;s role as &#8220;an informal adviser&#8221;.<!--more--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just kidding.
