It&#8217;ll send a discouraging message to those who wonder whether America will continue to work for the freedom of prisoners. It&#8217;ll give great status to those who have suppressed human rights and human dignity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. president&#8217;s decision to talk with certain international figures can be counterproductive, Bush said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can send chilling signals and messages to our allies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It can send confusion about our foreign policy. It discourages reformers inside their own country.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes, it is astounding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cogitamusblog.com\/2008\/02\/president-bushs.html\">how obtuse Mr. Bush can be<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/csnc\/blogs\/ezraklein_archive?month=02&amp;year=2008&amp;base_name=chutzpah\">Ezra Klein<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The idea that Bush &#8212; who regularly hangs out with, and thus &#8220;lends the status of the office and the status of our country&#8221; to the leaders of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/By_Country\/Saudi_Arabia\/page.do?id=1011230&amp;n1=3&amp;n2=30&amp;n3=980\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationclearinghouse.info\/article3943.htm\">Uzbekistan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/g\/drl\/rls\/hrrpt\/2004\/41704.htm\">Russia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_rights_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China\">China<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/g\/drl\/rls\/hrrpt\/2003\/27926.htm\">Egypt<\/a> &#8212; would ever try and take a strong, principled stand against meeting with, much less supporting, repressive autocrats&#8230;well, it&#8217;s what my grandmother would call <em>chutzpah<\/em>, and what the rest of us would call &#8220;nonsense on stilts.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Associated Press: &#8220;What&#8217;s lost by embracing a tyrant who puts his people in prison because of their political beliefs?&#8221; Bush asked rhetorically. &#8220;What&#8217;s lost is it&#8217;ll send the wrong message.
