{"id":4016,"date":"2009-09-23T08:31:55","date_gmt":"2009-09-23T13:31:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/2parse.com\/?p=4016"},"modified":"2009-09-23T11:13:10","modified_gmt":"2009-09-23T16:13:10","slug":"the-mayors-filthy-salt-habit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2parse.com\/?p=4016","title":{"rendered":"The Mayor&#8217;s Filthy Salt Habit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Mayor Bloomberg\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3590\/3465791787_ca4c124775.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mayor Bloomberg launched a health initiative last year aimed at reducing the city&#8217;s salt consumption leading to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/regional\/bloomy_to_nyc_hold_the_salt_0vobkeppZGx83kacMvp0lN\">such memorable headlines<\/a> as the <em>New York Post<\/em>&#8216;s:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h1 style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 5px; padding-left: 0px; font: normal normal normal 30.5px\/normal 'Arial Black'; letter-spacing: -2px; line-height: 1em; margin: 0px; color: black;\">BLOOMY TO NYC: HOLD THE SALT<\/h1>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The other New York rag, the<em> Daily News<\/em>, quoted Bloomberg on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/lifestyle\/health\/2008\/09\/26\/2008-09-26_bloomberg_citys_gotta_shake_salt_habit.html\">the new salt initiative<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>People are eating too much salt, me included.\u00a0After this, we can keep going. People don&#8217;t like to have somebody come in and tell them what to do, but afterward, if it turns out to be something that&#8217;s in their interest, they sure as heck say thank you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Michael Barbaro of the <em>New York Times <\/em>though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/23\/dining\/23bloom.html?_r=1&amp;pagewanted=all\">gets the real skinny<\/a> a year after this initiative is launched: the Mayor himself &#8220;dumps salt on almost everything, even saltine crackers.&#8221; Barbaro apparently has been watching the mayor in dining situations closely &#8211; even counting the number of dashes of salt applied to his pizza: 6. (Salt on pizza?! Really?). This paragraph is representative of the piece:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But Mr. Bloomberg, 67, likes his popcorn so salty that it burns others\u2019 lips. (At Gracie Mansion, the cooks deliver it to him with a salt shaker.) He sprinkles so much salt on his morning bagel \u201cthat it\u2019s like a pretzel,\u201d said the manager at Viand, a Greek diner near Mr. Bloomberg\u2019s Upper East Side town house.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing wrong with a man &#8211; who admits his own faults &#8211; attempting to curb unhealthy behavior.
