Obama&#8217;s rhetorical cotton candy lacks Reagan&#8217;s ideological nourishment, but he is Reaganesque in two important senses: People like listening to him, and his manner lulls his adversaries into underestimating his sheer toughness &#8211; the tempered steel beneath the sleek suits.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think Will misses the way Obama is re-shaping the political conversation with his inspirational and often-times vague sounding pronouncements.\u00a0 (Would Will call the Gettysburg Address &#8220;rhetorical cotton candy&#8221;?)\u00a0 But he senses Obama&#8217;s toughness in a way that others &#8211; for example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/05\/07\/opinion\/07dowd.html?pagewanted=print\">Maureen Dowd<\/a> &#8211; does not.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>And Ms. Clinton has apparently launched her strategy for the coming weeks &#8211; claiming Obama can&#8217;t win.\u00a0 So far today, her campaign has said:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/election2008\/2008-05-07-clintoninterview_N.htm\">White people support <em>her<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Democrats can&#8217;t win with just &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/05\/08\/clinton-touts-white-support\/\">eggheads and African-Americans<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Obama is a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2008\/05\/07\/ed-koch-obama-is-a-sure-l_n_100697.html\">sure loser<\/a>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coming up next (or again):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can&#8217;t win without old people.<\/li>\n<li>Obama is a girlie man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If Mr. Koch was speaking out of turn &#8211; as opposed to as part of her plan &#8211; than it could be plausibly said that she is still trying to get the Vice Presidential slot.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Via reddit, I just read this story.
