Bush Democrats for Hillary!

[digg-reddit-me]According to the exit polls, Democratic primary voters who had positive feelings about the Bush administration voted overwhelmingly for Hillary. Via Sullivan.

Which kind of makes sense. Which other candidate on the Democratic side would reinforce the partisanship of the Bush years? Which candidate would embrace most enthusiastically the new and improved presidential powers? Which candidate would solidify Bush’s legacy, by bringing Democrats aboard Bush’s agenda on executive power and a “tough” foreign policy?

Whoa! You have really misinterpreted the data here! Democratic primary voters who had negative feelings also voted overwhelmingly for Clinton. Conclusion: it’s a wash. The best way to read this table is to compare upper row value with lower role value. That points to Edwards, not Clinton. Obama comes off best because he has the greatest decrement. Even then, however, I don’t think there’s much you can make out of this data.

I don’t think I misinterpreted the data. But reading this again now, I should have pointed that we were still talking about a rather small percentage of the overall vote for Hillary. But the voters who saw both Bush and Hillary in a positive light accounted for a about 1% of her margin of victory.

With an election as close (and as small) as NH’s primary, even that percentage matters.
