Songerize

Came across reddit: this easy-to-use “play any song you want” music player. Just type in the name and artist, and the song plays.

They don’t have everything – but they have a lot. Going for more obscure tracks, I found they had about half of the ones I looked for – including modern-day jazz and classical performances, country, and alt-rock. For more mainstream titles, I tried fewer, but every one came up.

This isn’t the best music player – you can’t create playlists for example. But when you want to play a song for someone – it’s right there. When you need to listen to a particular song for some reason – again it’s there.

so how do they
a) make this into a business
b) not get sued for vicarious infringement

I’ve tried it and there seem to be quite a lot of holes, but I’ve already got my account at imeem.com which has a better catalog, real features and is legal…. so I’ll stay where I am.

I was wondering that myself…

But I think the real positive aspect of songerize is that it’s simple. imeem is easy enough to figure out, but to listen to a song takes at least 2 steps, not including signing up for or signing into an account.

I know Pandora won’t play a song for you if you request it – only “related songs”.

But for me – as I have most of my music in mp3 or aac form to put on my ipod, Songerize fills that void when – for whatever reason – I just need to hear a song.

It doesn’t have every song at the moment – but that’s something that can be fixed – as long as they’ve dealt with the legal implications. They key attractive feature for me is the simplicity.
