I would have to say it’s an open question as to whether or not these Republicans are adherents to the “Starve the Beast” strategy or are just pure hypocrites on the matter of fiscal responsibility.

Clinton’s surplus was due to the initial effects of GATT and Nafta, in whichthere was a flurry of commerical movement as the floodgates of US economic health opened and began to drain our arteries. Now the economy is in adown stage which is the endpoint of that vile strategy of the two parties.
That being said, fiscal conservatives are all jerks. Reaganomics was basically a theory of how to surrender the war on poverty, which had not gone well. After that, it weas all about Free Trade and Opening Markets, which is about cannibalizing the US economy to produce temporary activity that is not real growth.
